Government's statement on Deregulation and Pricing of Petroleum Products developed on 18th February 2005.

INTRODUCTION

1. In his address to Parliament on the State of the Nation delivered on 3rd February 2005, His Excellency the President of the Republic had this to say about petroleum in Ghana, in the light of the global increases in crude oil prices which have become common knowledge.

2. "This year government will take a decision on the deregulations of the petroleum sector. The continued handling by government of the sector makes it difficult to respond appropriately to market forces when necessary. At the moment the unrealistic pricing makes our petroleum products the cheapest within our immediate neighborhood and prone to smuggling. Deregulation will free government budgetary resources allowing it to cut down on borrowing and to increase allocation to vital social services. It will also allow the private sector to assume the role of a service provider within a well regulated environment".
