US AMBASSADOR TO GHANA PAYS COURTESY CALL TO THE MINISTER FOR ENERGY AND GREEN TRANSITION.

US ambassador to ghana pays courtesy call to the minister for energy and green transition.

In a move signifying the continued strengthening of bilateral ties, the United States Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Virginia E. Palmer, paid a courtesy call to the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, at the Ministry's office in Accra on Thursday, 10th April 2025.

The meeting focused on enhancing collaboration between the two nations in the energy sector, with a particular emphasis on sustainable and renewable energy initiatives. As both countries seek to address climate change and transition to greener energy, the conversation underscored the importance of international cooperation in achieving mutual energy goals.

During the discussions, the Ambassador expressed the United States' commitment to supporting Ghana's green transition efforts. She mentioned that due to the Minister’s directive for strict adherence to the Cash Waterfall Mechanism, commitments to the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) are being handled in a coordinated manner. According to her, the current environment promotes transparency and mutual benefits to all the parties.

The Minister, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor welcomed the Ambassador's visit and expressed appreciation for the ongoing support from the United States in Ghana's energy sector. He indicated that Ghana is keen on learning from global best practices and leveraging strategic partnerships to achieve its green energy targets. He further emphasized the significance of the Energy Ministry’s role in facilitating a sustainable future for Ghana, aligning with President John Dramani Maham's vision of a robust and environmentally friendly economy.

Among the topics discussed were initiatives to install street light solar power systems, improve energy efficiency especially in the distribution sector, and develop sustainable infrastructure projects that align with both nations' goals. The dialogue also explored avenues for creating educational exchanges and capacity-building programs to equip Ghanaian professionals with skills in renewable energy technologies.

Both parties agreed on the necessity of continuing dialogue and collaboration to strengthen the partnership, outlining a commitment to follow-up meetings and the establishment of working groups to drive specific projects forward.

The courtesy call concluded with both the Ambassador and the Minister reaffirming their dedication to fostering a sustainable and prosperous partnership that supports Ghana’s energy and green transition objectives.

 

This visit marks another milestone in the enduring friendship and cooperation between the United States and Ghana, reflecting shared values and mutual interests in promoting sustainable development and addressing challenges in the energy sector.

HON. JOHN ABDULAI JINAPOR INAUGURATES COMMITTEE ON FLOODING FROM THE AKOSOMBO DAM SPILLAGE.

Thursday, 13th March 2025. The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor has inaugurated a five-member committee to investigate the issues arising from the flooding caused by the spillage of the Akosombo Dam in September, 2023. This initiative underscores government's commitment to manage the impacts of environmental effects and ensure the safety and livelihood of affected communities.

The committee, chaired by Ing. Kirk Koffi is tasked with the responsibility to examine the events leading to the spillage, assess the extent of response to the flooding, identify affected areas and challenges encountered during the process, and evaluate strategies adopted to address the impact. Additionally, the committee is charged to recommend measures for immediate and long-term lessons.

During the inauguration, Hon. Jinapor emphasised the importance of a coordinated response to effectively mitigate the effects of the flooding on those affected. “If there ought to be compensation, how does the Government go about it?” The Minister quizzed.

He suggested the need for sustainable planning and flood management strategies to prevent similar incidents in the future. Hon. Jinapor called on key stakeholders, including local government officials, community leaders, and environmental experts, to offer the committee relevant information on the flooding to aid its work. 

Hon. John Jinapor further assured the committee of his support for them to carry out the assignment effectively.

The Chairman of the committee, Ing. Kirk Koffi on his part, thanked the Minister for the opportunity to undertake such an important exercise. He assured the Minister of their commitment to deliver on their mandate. 

Other members of the committee include Mr. Kwame Jantuah, Ing. Kofi Ellis, Ing. Kwaku Akosa and Ms. Georgette Emefa Fugah, Esq. (secretary).

The inauguration of the committee, reflects a proactive approach of the Government to handle the issues of the flooding and showcases dedication to improve the living standards of the victims and offer community protection. 

The committee has a period of one month to complete its work.

MINISTRY OF ENERGY AND GREEN TRANSITION PARTNERS GHANA COMMERCIAL BANK TO REVAMP GHANA CYLINDER MANUFACTURING COMPANY

Wednesday, 12th March 2025. The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, in collaboration with key stakeholders, has initiated plans to revamp the Ghana Cylinder Manufacturing Company (GCMC) to enhance its production capacity and overall efficiency.

In a high-level meeting chaired by the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, discussions were held with the Ghana National Gas Company (Ghana Gas) and Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) on forging a strategic partnership to provide the necessary support for GCMC’s full-scale operations.

Hon. Jinapor underscored the significant potential of GCMC to contribute to the local manufacturing industry and the government's clean energy agenda. He emphasized the need to revitalize the company and position it as a key player in the production of quality LPG cylinders for both domestic and industrial use.

To facilitate this transformation, the Minister announced the formation of a committee to develop a comprehensive roadmap for cabinet consideration. If approved, a Joint Project Implementation Committee, comprising representatives from the Ministry of Energy, Ghana Gas, GCMC, and the Ministry of Finance will oversee the successful execution of the revitalization plan.

The meeting was attended by key stakeholders, including Mr. Abdul-Rahman Mankir, the Acting Managing Director of GCMC; Madam Judith Blay, Acting CEO of Ghana Gas; Dr. Robert Lartey, Deputy CEO of Ghana Gas; Alhaj Farihan Alhassan, Managing Director of Ghana Commercial Bank; and officials from the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition.

The Ministry remains committed to strengthening local manufacturing, ensuring energy security, and promoting sustainable industrial growth in Ghana.

Ghana’s power supply sources are from hydroelectricity, thermal fueled by crude oil, natural gas and diesel, solar and also imports from La Cote D’Ivoire. Ghana also exports power to Togo, Benin and Burkina Faso. Ongoing grid expansions would allow further exports to other neighboring countries in the sub region.

The petroleum industry is typically categorized into three segments; Upstream, Midstream and Downstream. For the purposes of regulation in Ghana, the industry is divided into Upstream and downstream subsectors which cover activities from the exploration and production of petroleum through refining, storage, transportation, to the marketing of petroleum products.
