DEPUTY ENERGY MINISTER COMMISSIONS 850KW SOLAR PROJECT AT SINTEX.
The Deputy Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. Richard Gyan-Mensah, has commissioned an 850-kilowatt peak grid-tied solar power system at Sintex Industries, describing the initiative as a significant step toward Ghana’s goal of building a sustainable, secure, and competitive energy future.
In his remarks, Hon. Gyan-Mensah highlighted the project as a demonstration of effective collaboration between government and the private sector, leveraging technology to advance national development. He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to diversifying the country’s energy mix, reducing pressure on the national grid, and ensuring reliable and affordable power for industry.
The Deputy Minister noted that, in addition to thermal and hydro resources, Ghana continues to expand its renewable energy portfolio, with renewables contributing an increasingly meaningful share of the nation’s power generation. He stated that the newly commissioned 850-kilowatt peak solar plant, located within the Tema Industrial Park at Sintex, will further strengthen the country’s renewable energy capacity and support flagship initiatives such as solar-powered industrial electrification.
Hon. Gyan-Mensah also disclosed that an additional 1,400 megawatts of modern renewable energy is expected to be added to the national grid over the next five years through landmark projects and ongoing government initiatives.
ENERGY MINISTRY PUSHES FOR COLLABORATION TO EXPAND LPG USE
The Deputy Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. Richard Gyan-Mensah, has called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to accelerate the adoption of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) nationwide.
Speaking at the maiden edition of the National LPG Forum 2025, held under the theme “One Industry, One Vision: A Collaborative Approach to LPG Sector Transformation,” Hon. Gyan-Mensah described LPG as an environmentally friendly cooking fuel, while acknowledging the affordability challenges that continue to hinder widespread adoption.
He noted that the forum is designed to enhance transparency, strengthen the LPG value chain, and support the national target of transitioning at least 50 percent of the population to LPG by 2030. The Deputy Minister highlighted ongoing initiatives such as the rollout of the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM) and the distribution of LPG cookstoves to first-time users.
Hon. Gyan-Mensah reaffirmed government’s commitment to working with industry stakeholders to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient access to LPG across the country. He commended the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) for creating a platform that fosters dialogue and collaboration within the sector.
“Over the years, we have made some progress in the LPG sector, including the pilot and roll-out of the Cylinder Recirculation Model. We anticipate seeing more cylinder exchange points in the coming months and years to improve access,” he said.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC), Dr. Riverson Oppong, also addressed participants, calling for a review of the current LPG tender agreement to enhance transparency. He emphasized the central role of the LPG sector in advancing Ghana’s clean cooking agenda, stressing the need to ensure both accessibility and affordability for households.
Since the launch of the National LPG Promotion Programme in 2022, the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has distributed more than 40,000 LPG cookstoves and accessories to first-time users as part of efforts to reduce cost barriers and encourage wider adoption.
