About Us:

This directorate was established in December 2010 to focus on the development and promotion of renewable energy for increasing access to sustainable energy services.
Renewable energy resources in Ghana includes woodfuel, hydro, solar, wind, biofuels, waste-to-energy and animal traction.
The Directorate currently consists of three professional and four support staffs. It also has two National Service Personnel and three temporary staffs on attachment.

Renewable Energy Resource Potentials in Ghana

The development of wind energy resource for commercial power generation in Ghana is steadily taking centre stage of national discourse. Preliminary wind resource assessments results in selected sites along the coasts and high elevations showed moderate to excellent wind potentials. Especially, sites with good wind regimes are those along the east coastlines. The gross wind electric potential is about 5,600 MW representing some 1,128km2. Infrastructure such as road, grid network and load centres coincide with most areas where these wind potentials exist. The table shows a summary of gross wind electric potential for Ghana.

Solar Energy Resource Potential

Ghana is endowed with enormous solar energy resource spread across the entire country. Daily solar irradiation level ranges from 4kWh/m2 to 6kWh/m2. Areas of highest irradiation levels are spread across the entire northern belt which represents over 60% of the total national land mass. The annual sunshine duration ranges between 1800 to 3000 hours offering very high potential for grid connected and off-grid applications. Over 6,000 solar systems with an installed capacity of 3.2MW have been installed in the country mainly for off-grid applications.

Hydropower Resource Potential

The potential exploitable hydro resource for Ghana is about 2500MW. Already, 1,180MW of this potential have been developed and operational at Akosombo and Kpong. An additional 400MW is under construction, bringing the total exploited capacity to 1,580MW or about 60%. The remaining 840MW capacity is located at about 21 sites with capacities ranging from medium (95MW) to small (17MW) hydropower potentials. The Directorate focuses on promoting and developing the country’s small hydropower (SHP) potential considered below 40MW.

Bioenergy Resource Potential

Ghana has appreciable bioenergy potential with biomass energy in the form of woodfuel and charcoal consumption accounting for about 72% of total energy consumption. Two-thirds of the country or 18.3 Mha is under tree cover. The climatic and soil conditions are very suitable for large scale agriculture, energy crops and sustainable woodfuel productions. It is estimated that with annual rainfall of 1,300 – 2,200mm, about 243PJ/yr or 65,000GWh/yr of woodfuel could be obtained from the existing tropical forests.
