Energy Ministry Pushes for Collaboration to Expand LPG Use

The Deputy Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. Richard Gyan-Mensah, has called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to accelerate the adoption of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) nationwide.

Speaking at the maiden edition of the National LPG Forum 2025, held under the theme “One Industry, One Vision: A Collaborative Approach to LPG Sector Transformation,” Hon. Gyan-Mensah described LPG as an environmentally friendly cooking fuel, while acknowledging the affordability challenges that continue to hinder widespread adoption.

He noted that the forum is designed to enhance transparency, strengthen the LPG value chain, and support the national target of transitioning at least 50 percent of the population to LPG by 2030. The Deputy Minister highlighted ongoing initiatives such as the rollout of the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM) and the distribution of LPG cookstoves to first-time users.

Hon. Gyan-Mensah reaffirmed government’s commitment to working with industry stakeholders to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient access to LPG across the country. He commended the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) for creating a platform that fosters dialogue and collaboration within the sector.

“Over the years, we have made some progress in the LPG sector, including the pilot and roll-out of the Cylinder Recirculation Model. We anticipate seeing more cylinder exchange points in the coming months and years to improve access,” he said.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC), Dr. River son Oppong, also addressed participants, calling for a review of the current LPG tender agreement to enhance transparency. He emphasized the central role of the LPG sector in advancing Ghana’s clean cooking agenda, stressing the need to ensure both accessibility and affordability for households.

Since the launch of the National LPG Promotion Programme in 2022, the Ministry of Energyand Green Transition has distributed more than 40,000 LPG cookstoves and accessories to first-time users as part of efforts to reduce cost barriers and encourage wider adoption.
